The Rent Tax Credit is a tax relief for private tenants, offering a 20% reduction on rent paid up to a maximum of €1,000 per year for individuals (€2,000 for jointly assessed couples) for the tax years 2022 to 2028. It applies to primary residences, second homes for work/study, and “digs”.
Who Can Claim the Rent Tax Credit:

Eligible Renters: You must pay tax in Ireland and pay rent for a qualifying rental property.

Tenancy Type: The property must be registered with the Residential Tenancies Board (RTB) (or “rent-a-room”/”digs” arrangements).

Parents: Parents paying for their child to attend college can claim it if the child is in a qualifying tenancy.

Restrictions: You cannot claim it if you receive state housing support (e.g., HAP), rent from a Housing Association, or if you are renting from your parent or child.

Excluded People: Members of the Oireachtas cannot claim this credit.
